Toronto's Last Saber Battle

Newmindspace was started in 2005 by two people, Lori Kufner and Kevin Bracken. Our first event was an Easter Egg hunt, and what followed was an incredible 12 years of parties on subway cars, giant games of Capture the Flag, and of course, a pillow fight tradition that spread over the entire world, starting right here in Toronto.

We have seen amazing things, the most incredible of which is the community of people that grew around Newmindspace events. People met best friends and spouses at these events, had transformative experiences, and came together in the thousands to make art out of people.

In many ways, Newmindspace was a product of its particular time in history: David Miller was the mayor, the public space movement was just beginning, and our little project was meant to be a playful part of that movement, which was in its own way a form of guerrilla activism. Boy, have things changed since then! As time has passed, each of the founders have found passion in other things.

It is with a profound sense of gratitude that we announce this battle will be Toronto's last that we will be orchestrating. We are not sure what the future holds; we may be seeking one or two young apprentices to keep the flame alive and take Newmindspace in the direction that their hearts tell them to go, or resurrect the old site as a sort of archive for the future. However, we plan to make this saber battle an extremely special finale - so don't miss it!

You can help make this battle extra memorable by inviting your friends on Facebook and reserving a saber for the battle. See you there!

Love,

Kevin & Lori <3
